For example, if you were going to catch a train at 2:00, would you be going at 2:00 in the morning or 2:00 in the afternoon? We use a.m. or p.m. to tell the difference. A.M. is latin for "ante meridiem (which means "before midday.") P.M. is latin for "post meridiem" (which means "after midday.)
But with the 24hour clock, you don't need to use a.m. or p.m. The day starts at 0:00 hours, or midnight. From there, each hour is counted one by one, until you reach 24:00, or 0:00 the next day. We already count our hours from 1-12 on the 12:00 clock. In the afternoon, we start again at 1. However, on the 24 hour clock 1:00pm would be 13:00hours, then 14:00hours, and so on.
