Today is the beginning of the Chinese New Year, and it marks the year of the horse in the Chinese calendar. Today our class visited Mrs. V's grade 2 class to learn about the Chinese New Year. The Grade 2's put on a wonderful play for us, teaching us all about the tradition of Chinese New Year celebrations.
What exactly is the Chinese New Year? It is a 15-day holiday for celebrating with friends and family. It begins on the first day of a new moon, and ends on a full moon. Because the calendar is based on the lunar year, the date of the Chinese New Year changes from year to year.
Each year in the Chinese calendar is represented by an animal, and depending on the year you were born, you are said to have the character traits of that animal. This year is the year of the horse, and many of the students in our class were born during the year of the horse.
Check out these characteristics of the horse:
The horse is independent and popular, fun, cheerful and energetic. They don't like to sit still, and they don't like to be tied down! If needs be, a horse will put his head down and keep on going with a task until it is finished. The flip side of this determined spirit is that a horse can also be stubborn!
Do you share any of these characteristics? If you were born in the year of another animal, which one was it? Do you share any of its characteristics?
