Today we began reading the book “The Giver,” by Lois Lowry. Actually, Miss Tamasi is using it as a read aloud book, so the class is really just listening to it. But while everyone listens to the book, they are asked to use sticky notes to jot down any questions, comments, or reactions they have to the book so far. Boy, were there a lot of sticky notes today! So far, everyone seems to be wondering what on Earth is up with this “community” that Jonas, the main character, lives in. There seems to be a lot of really “interesting” rules for life in the community. |
For starters, each family “unit” can only have 2 children: one male and one female. Everyone in a family has to spend time each night discussing their feelings, and it is against the rules to keep any feelings to yourself.
It got me wondering: If you were the leader of a community, would you have any rules for your citizens? If so, what would your rules be, and what would be the reason for them?
