Today we took our Science lesson outdoors! We have been learning about biodiversity, and exploring the wide variety of living organisms throughout our world. Today's lesson began with two questions: "How many different types of trees do you think there are on our school property? How can we find out?" We decided to go outside and attempt to answer those questions. Click the title of this post or the "read more" link to see what we discovered. |

Our class has really gotten off to a great start with Mathletics! After just one week of working online with this amazing program, we have made many appearances in the Hall of Fame.

Today we began using Mathletics in our math class. If you've never used Mathletics before, you definitely have to check it out! Mathletics is a fun, interactive program that helps kids (and adults) practice their math skills. You can play against other people, or practice skills that are directly related to what you're doing in math class. You can earn points toward certificates, and credits to use in the avatar store. Best of all, you can watch your math skills improve in a fun way! We'll be using Mathletics this year as part of our homework program. Miss Tamasi will be assigning tasks each night for the students to complete. The best thing about the assigned tasks is that there is instant feedback and you will know right away if you are right or wrong. Having trouble? Click on the question mark for a quick tutorial about how to work through the question. Too easy for you? Mathletics automatically adjusts itself to your level and the questions will become increasingly more difficult. In addition to the assigned curriculum activities, there is a Live component, where you can play against other people from anywhere in the world. If you challenge another person, you will get 60 seconds to try to answer as many questions correctly as you possibly can. You can even choose your level from 1 - 10. Teachers like Mathletics because it helps to get students excited about math, and they can see their students' confidence build in mental math calculations. Parents like it because they can keep track of their child's progress if they register in the parent centre. Students love it because it's a much more enjoyable way to complete math homework each night, rather than bringing home a heavy textbook or a bunch of worksheets. Plus, it's fun to challenge other "Mathletes" from around the world. What do you love about Mathletics? We have had a great start to our Grade 5 year! I can already tell that this is going to be an amazing class. Everyone already works so hard, is very polite, and seems to get along really well.
We celebrated mass together, and we have had fun getting to know each other through some ice breaker games like “Heads Up 7Up,” and “Wah.” We have also learned how to play “Silent Ball,” and “Who Changed the Motion?” But we’ve done a lot more than just play games. Writers take the invisible thoughts that are in their heads, and bring them to life on paper. A writer's notebook is the best, and most treasured tool for every writer. Good writers write whenever inspiration hits. Great writers write everyday! What do writer's write in their notebooks? ANYTHING! They can jot down ideas, scribble down notes, plan out a story, sketch out scenery. They might compose a poem, write out lists, brainstorm questions, or share their personal thoughts. A writer's notebook is everything and anything that a writer needs it to be. Even famous people, like Taylor Swift, use them! Check out this clip below of Taylor Swift using her own writer's notebook to jot down ideas, that later turned into a hit song! We have already started to use our writer's notebooks, and I can tell already that we are going to get a LOT of use out of them this year.
What will you write in your writer's notebook this year? |
